best area to stay in Mexico City
I'm considering traveling with my 18 year old daughter in March for a trip to Mexico City- can anyone suggest a clean, safe area where they like to stay? My sense reading the reviews is that (a) Centro Historico is safe by day, a little shady at night, (b) Zona Rosa is a little safer but a little seedier, and (c) Polanco may be the better bet but is a bit farther away from activity and night life --- any suggestions?

I would say your observations are pretty similar to what I thought too. I was happy with my choice to stay in Centro Historico because the hotel was very nice and the ease of transportation by having the subway just steps out the door. There weren't a lot of bars or restaurants, outside of my hotel, located near me but the street food vendors were everywhere and better. I did enjoy walking through Roma and will probably try to stay there next time I'm in the city.Zona Rosa is an area with a much more liberal lifestyle and while I didn't find it nessessarily seedier, My standards for seedy are probably more tolerable than most. There is definitely a noticeable difference in the clientelle the area attracts. There are lots of good restaurants, bars and hotels in this area. As far as safety goes I felt the area to be quite safe. There is a police presence that is also noticeable in this area as well. I don't think you will be disappointed that you stayed in one area to find out another is better. With the ease of transportation you can go anywhere in the city you want. Another option, though a little further out is Coyoacan.

Hi Jim,
it depends on what you are interested in, Roma i think would be a good option as on Alvaro Obregon Ave.there are many restaurants and bars and is close to Zona Rosa and Downtown.

You should buy a guidebook and plan an itinerary then decide which area would work the best for you.

I'd strongly recommend you to stay at one of the hotels located in Reforma, near Chapultepec in Polanco. Those are the best hotels in the city and you'll find a lot of transport options to take you anywhere in the city. Hotel W, from StarWood Hotels is a not so expensive option with modern suites, nice views and very well located. You might also want to check Presidente Intercontinental.

My vote goes to La Roma, with its Staggering amount of bars there as well as amazing restaurants. Lots of people walking around at all hours of the day and you are situated halfway between Chapultepec Park and its museums and the Centro Historico.
Also, as for the W being recommended as a "not so expensive option," it does go for about $175-$200 a night, which makes it one of the more expensive hotels in the city.

As to hotels, what is your budget? In dollars, not adjectives. Transport in Mexico City is pretty cheap for the most part so it's better to be in an area you feel comfortable in. Of the ones mentioned they are all within 20 minutes or less from each other..depending on time of day.

We've been to Mexico several times but only to Mexico for the first time last year. We had been hesitant to go with some minor fears about safety and pollution. It turned out that we loved the city and both fears were thrown out the proverbial window. We never once had any fears about safety in our eight days there (although we did avoid certain areas of the city) and we've seen worse air pollution elsewhere and the city was much cleaner and friendlier than we expected.
As to your question about where to stay you are correct about Polanco being a ways away from the rest of the city although it is reasonable to walk to Chapultepec Park(especially to the wonderful Anthro Museum) and its museums and the Castillo. If you stay in Polanco you will have some insight in how the 1% lives.
Centro Historico is not as bad as some think it is in the evening. Lots to do and see there and there are a number of hotels and restaurants with a variety of cost.
We like Condesa very much. Although there are not many tourist things to do there it is very central to what you will want to see like Roma and is very safe. There are parks, some shopping, and plenty of places to eat. The neighborhood is very upper middle class and safe and has bus lines and the metro to take you elsewhere.
Besides hotels there are a number of apartment rentals and B&Bs. We stayed just outside of Condesa in a house where we had the run of the house, our own bedroom and a shared bath with the other room that was available, a sitting room, and breakfast. It was grand close to plenty of places to eat, shops and two large grocery stores, buses, the metro, and the new metrobus. The room was only $50 per night for both of us. Almost every evening we walked through colonia Condesa to look for supper or a snack or ice cream.
Buena suerte!

Condesa for me.
It depends on what R U looking for, but condesa or roma norte is the place where nice bars, people and excelents restaurants are, its close to downtown if you want to go on tour, or museums. The Hotels i've been are The red tree house and Maria Condesa, good prices and great location. if the trip is a business one, you need to know which area R U getting, Polanco, SantaFe, Insurgentes Sur or Reforma, there are many hotels there

I have been following this Topic and have a similar question. My husband and I are going to visit Mexico City for the first time in January, 2014. We plan to stay four or five nights. We are interested in good food,
architecture, local culture, and art - we are both great lovers of KAHLO and RIVERA. We are interested in a very nice (preferably not too large) hotel in a convenient and safe neighborhood - NOT interested in nightlife or the bar scene - (we are both "young" seniors!). One very appealing hotel that was recommended is in Polanco and we understand that is too "out of the way". Please recommend hotels and neighborhoods for our first trip.
