Orvieto Cathedral, Orvieto

4/ 10

Orvieto Cathedral, Orvieto

This Umbrian cathedral may not be as famous as some of the others on this list, but it should be: five separate artists worked on the cathedral’s design and façade over a 200-year period, and the result was magical. Its Romanesque-Gothic facade is adorned with marble bas-reliefs, glittering golden mosaics, and an enormous rose window built by the sculptor Orcagna. Inside, you’ll find graceful travertine columns, elaborate friezes, and beautiful Gothic frescoes dedicated to the life of St. Mary (which took local artist Ugolino di Prete Ilario a decade to finish).
