Used Lenses from Osaka?
Apr 20, 2010
Hi!
Going to Osaka (and Hokkaido!) for a few days; was wondering if anyone knows of any shops that have a decent selection of used lenses (Nikon and Canon) in Osaka? I am going with a Japanese friend, so I can probably find any address and language will not be a problem.

Right under Osaka station there is a good camera shop with tons of used lenses.
"Standing at the central exit in JR Osaka Station head out towards Daimaru and Hotel Granvia, but do not exit at ground level go down the stairs before the exit into to the basement and imediately turn left gift shops. THere is a huge used camera shop burried in the back."
There are quite a few more but I can't remember the shop names / addresses (been a while).

Near Osaka (umeda) station in the Dai 4 eki mae bldg. you will find Obayashi Camera.

This is my favorite place for used lenses in Japan. I think they cringed every time I showed up since I speak very little Japanese. But, they were always helpful and worked with me to resolve a couple of problems. Over-all very good customer service and a good selection of good condition "used" lenses - even some exotics.

If I still remember correctly, there's a Kitamura Camera opposite the huge Yodobashi in Umeda. I think it's on the 2nd storey or something. They have some nice lenses there.
But there're other bigger Kitamura Camera shops somewhere else and they deal with 2nd hand lenses, just that I can't remember where the other shops are located.
Don't know if this helps

Thanks guys, very useful info here, I am making a list and will be visiting these!!
Please add to this thread if you know any more, from what I know about Japan (tokyo) you have to visit a number of used shops to find the items you're looking for, at the right price!

Tokiwa Camera in Nipponbashi has nice selection and quite cheap by Japanese standards.

Any other shops I found by accident and would be unable to direct you to them.
Did you find anything you were after?

The other Kitamura Camera is in Namba City department store complex south from the Nankai railway station in Namba.
They have -10% sales about 4-6 times a year, so that might be a good time to catch some deals. Though I still prefer the Tokiwa shop when I want to get some lenses.

I live in Tokyo but my all time favourite store in Osaka is Camera no Naniwa:
They have a very wide ranging and very big selection of second hand cameras and lenses - very often at good prices (often better than comparable deals in Tokyo).
Near Shinsaibashi Station (Midosuji subway line) Exit 5 and 6. In one of the side streets of the shoutengai/shopping arcade.

I'm from Tokyo, so I don't have any addresses in Osaka, but from various trips to Osaka I know that there are good used places there. When you arrive pick up a copy of the Asahi or Nippon camera magazines, they always have a slew of ads for used shops in Osaka. Failing that, just go to any good camera store and have your Japanese friend ask for the addresses of shops that have used gear.
I have been buying used gear in Japan for the past 25 years, and IMO it is absolutely the best place on earth in which to find stuff used. The gear is clean and well checked, and there is no cheating going on. The used gear is not particularly cheap, but it is usually in as-new condition. Sometimes if there is minor blemishing on the outside (almost always perfect mechanically and optically) you can get a real bargain. I recently picked up a 1st gen Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 for about $250, and I saw a Tokina 150-500 f5.6 for about $200. There is a chain of stores called "Hard Off" (no kidding) that sell recycled camera, music and hi-fi goods. Always good hunting there, although the selection is not as wide as in a specialized camera store. Still, some great stuff there sometimes.
Good luck,
Toby

Many thanks for the tips, I will look for the "hard off" shops next time, and also get some magazines.
Surprisingly, I found a larger number of super teles in Osaka than in Tokyo. I dont know why, there were just more of them. BUT the prices weren't bargains, just fair to a bit high. The real bargains I saw in Tokyo, but one thing I realized is that these bargains are snapped up by 'pros' who I suspect sell this stuff off on ebay or something.

there is a big camera shop near JR OSaka station, I think the name was,"Oobayashi camera".
and if you also go to Tokyo ,you should check PC-bomber out, which probably is the cheapest camera and computer shop in Japan, with great service, 99 percent of its customers being very very happy with its service and price.
also , there is a similar shop called Osaka Bomber, which is probably owned by the same PC retailer as the above shop I mentioned," PC-bomber"(used be discount computer shop).
and there is a good camera discount shop in Nakano-ku, Tokyo , called ,"Fuji camera" but Fuji camera is not as reputable as PC Bomber.
and also check," Kitamura".
they have many locations in Osaka and almost any city in Japan.
and there is also a good shop called , "Arai camera" , actually you can check their web site and you can order on line , I dont know if they send it to a hotel but if you have a lcoal friend , just borrow his or her address as I do.
Arai camera is a good , trusted , very reputable dealer in Kobe or Kakogawa , which is a small city near Kobe (actually between Osaka and Kobe) , I think it is about 45minutes a way from Osaka station,
I think you can get there from Osaka by "Hansin" Kobe line.
As for Sapporo , I don't know anyhting about it there, since I've never been to Sapporo.
In Japan , usually Nikon price is cheaper than any where else , but Canon, in general ,is a bit more expensice than in US , espcailly compared to B and H price.
so , I usually buy my Canon when I go back to San Diego area but Nikon in Japan or HK.
you can click on the above link and see the more detialed shop info, but it is written in Japanese.
this is fuji camera's link and it is a cheap shop but not as reputable as Arai camera.
this is OSaka bomber 's home page , its AFS24-70f2.8GED price is probably cheapest here and if you can bargain it , you can get it even cheaper than the price listed on the page.
this is also a very reputable dealer , with 99 percent of people being very satisfied with its service.
