The second-most populous city in Belgium, Antwerp vies with the capital city Brussels for tourists' affection; its rich history and reputation for fine art, food and fashion lures travelers from all corners of the world - not to mention from over the Dutch border. Antwerp can easily be added to a Netherlands/Low Countries itinerary with these transportation directions.
Amsterdam to Antwerp by Train
The only direct train connection between Amsterdam and Antwerp is with the Thalys train. The journey between Amsterdam Central Station and Antwerp starts at €29 ($40) each way and takes 75 minutes. Alternatively, for the same price, travelers can take an Intercity direct train from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, then transfer to a Roosendaal-bound train to complete the journey to Antwerp; the trip duration is about two hours. Amsterdam to Antwerp by Bus
International coach is the most affordable option for travel between Amsterdam and Antwerp. The trip is just two hours and 45 minutes, and is substantially cheaper than the train. Two international coach companies serve this route; fares start from €9 ($12.40) each way onEurolines, €15 ($20.60) on Megabus. (These fares are apt to rise as the departure date nears.) Each company has different departure and arrival points within the two cities: the Eurolines Amsterdam stop is situated outside of Amsterdam Amstel Station, about 10 minutes by train from Amsterdam Central Station, while the Antwerp stop, located at Van Stralenstraat 22/24, is about 10 minutes by tram (line 3, 5, 10 or 11) from the main station. The Megabus stops are the Zeeburg bus depot on Zuiderzeeweg in Amsterdam (served by tram 26 and buses 37 and 245) and the Plantinkaai in Antwerp center.
