Hara Museum of Contemporary Art 
15 minute walk from Shinagawa Station 
Hours: 11:00 to 17:00 (Wednesdays until 20:00) 
Closed: Mondays and New Year holidays 
Admission: 1100 yen
This museum has a curious collection of modern art, and exhibits paintings, sculptures, videos and installations by Japanese and international artists. The Hara Museum ARC, a branch of this museum, is located in Ikaho.
Idemitsu Museum of Arts
5 minute walk from Yurakucho Station 
Hours: 10:00 to 17:00 (Fridays until 19:00) 
Closed: Mondays and New Year Holidays 
Admission: 1000 yen
Reopened in 2007 after a two year renovation, the Idemitsu Museum of Art displays a rotating collection of Japanese and East Asian art. There is also a traditional tea room and a ceramics gallery.
Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum 
5 minute walk from Tokyo Station 
Hours: 10:00 to 18:00 (until 20:00 on Fridays)

Originally built in 1894 for the Mitsubishi Company as the first Western style office building in the Marunouchi district, the Ichigokan was reconstructed and reopened in 2010 as a museum focusing on 19th century Western art.
National Museum of Modern Art 
A few steps from Takebashi Subway Station 
Hours: 10:00 to 17:00, Friday 10:00 to 20:00 
Closed: Mondays and New Year holidays 
Admission: 430 yen, free the first Sunday of every month
The National Museum of Modern Art displays works of modern art (from the Meiji Period on) produced by Japanese artists. The museum hosts permanent as well as temporary exhibitions.
National Museum of Western Art 
3 minute walk from Ueno Station in Ueno Park 
Temporary closure from October 5, 2015 to March 18, 2016 (partially open from October 10 to January 11) 
Hours: 9:30 to 17:30 (until 17:00 in winter, until 20:00 on Fridays) 
Closed: Mondays (or following day if Mon is a holiday), Dec 28 to Jan 
Admission: 430 yen, special exhibitions extra
This museum displays western art, primarily of European artists. There is no permanent gallery and the rotating exhibits are mostly comprised from the museum's collection. Admission is free on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays each month.
Nezu Museum 
10 minute walk from Omotesando Station 
Hours: 10:00 to 17:00 
Closed: Mondays (or following day if Mon is a holiday), New Year holidays 
Admission: 1000 yen (regular), 1200 yen (special exhibitions)
This museum exhibits various Japanese and East Asian works of art with an emphasis on tea related art pieces and ancient Chinese bronzes. It also includes a spacious garden with a pond surrounded by a small forest and several tea houses.
Ota Memorial Museum of Art
5 minute walk from Harajuku Station 
Hours: 10:30 to 17:30

Closed November 24, 2015 to February 1, 2016 for renovations 
Admission: Varies by exhibition (typically 700 yen)
This small and elegant museum exhibits selected ukiyo-e paintings and prints from the vast collection of the late Ota Seizo, which is comprised of more than 10,000 pieces of art. Exhibits are changed monthly.
Teien Art Museum 
5-10 minute walk from Meguro Station 
Hours: 10:00 to 18:00 (entry until 17:30) 
Closed: 2nd&4th Wed of month (or next day if Wed is holiday), New Year, between exhibitions 
Admission: Varies by exhibition (typically 700 yen)
This unique museum stages exhibitions in the former residence of aprince, built in Art Deco style in the 1930s, and in a modern annex. Exhibitions change periodically and cover various art forms, including paintings, sculptures, tableware and jewelery by mainly European, Russian and Japanese artists. The residence also features a pretty Japanese-style pond garden.
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 
5 minute walk from Ueno Station in Ueno Park 
Hours: 9:30 to 17:30 (until 20:00 on Fridays) 
Closed: First and third Monday of each month, New Year holidays 
Admission: Varies by exhibition
Reopened in April 2012, this museum displays all types of art in its six galleries. There is no permanent collection, but multiple concurrently held temporary exhibitions by various art groups. Some exhibitions are paid, others are free.
Bridgestone Museum of Art
The Bridgestone Museum is closed from May 18, 2015 for several years due to the renewal of the building.
The works displayed at the Bridgestone Museum of Art are from the museum's collection of impressionist, post impressionist, and 20th century artworks, and includes some sculpture and ancient art.

Roppongi Art Triangle

Mori Museum 
5 minute walk from Roppongi Subway Station

Located on the top floors of the Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills, this innovative museum hosts changing exhibitions of contemporary art from around the world.
National Art Center 
At Exit 6 of Nogizaka Subway Station 
Hours: 10:00 to 18:00 (Fridays until 20:00) 
Closed: Tuesdays (or following day if Tues is a national holiday), New Year holidays
Admission: Varies by exhibition (typically 1000 yen)
Rather than having an own collection, this large governmental art museum hosts various temporary art exhibitions of high profile. Designed by Kurokawa Kisho, the museum was opened in 2007.
Suntory Museum of Art 
At Exit 8 of Roppongi Subway Station 
Hours: 10:00 to 18:00, Fri to Sat until 20:00 
Closed: Tuesdays and January 1 
Admission: Varies by exhibition (typically 1300 yen)
The Suntory Museum of Art is located at Tokyo Midtown inside the Galleria Shopping Mall. The museum shows temporary exhibitions of mixed art styles and periods with the overall theme of showing art in everyday life.
